The World Magic Day was originally the US National Magic Day. There is no mention of this holiday without mentioning Harry Houdini. Houdini was a Hungarian – born American illusionist and stunt performer. He lived between 1874 and 1926.

Harry Houdini is famous for his escape artistry and illusion. He was known for challenging police in every cities he visited to restrain him in ways they feel best for him to escape. Harry died on 31st October 1926 but his legend lives on.

One year after his death, his wife Bese Houdini presented a trophy in his honor to commemorate his first year memorial on October 31st 1927 and that became Houdini day. This later became a National Magic Day until 1938 when it became the World Magic Day.

#2. (Inter)National Hug A Sheep Day.

Hug a Sheep Day also popularly known as the National Hug a Sheep Day has a quite young history. It was first celebrated in 1992 to honor all wonderful sheep in the world. Sara the founder of this date picked it in the honor of a Sheep called Punkin. It has now grown into popularity globally and it’s now a kind of an international event.

The Hug a Sheep Day is actually celebrated on the last Saturday of October. Last year(2019) it was on 26th but this year (2020) it falls on the 30th.

Where it all started and how.

Punkin was born on October 30th 1992 and it seems that he needed to be rescued from the Blue Grass Stockyards where he was born. Fate had it that a lady called Sara who later went on to be popularly known as thecrazysheeplady was just at hand to rescue Punkin. Ironically she didn’t had an inkling that she liked sheep.

Punkin was sickling, but Sara hosted him in her bathroom for weeks until he was strong enough to move to the barn. He ended up living for the next 12 calendars to the bewilderment of the vets and other doubting Thomases. But that’s not all!

Within the 12 years Sara followed her Sheep keeping love. She kept adding sheep after sheep and when the lambs started coming, they came in dozens – that’s how the 26 acres Equinox Punkin Patch came to be.

From the humble beginnings of a simple rescue to a global recognition. Bravo Sara!

How to Celebrate the Hug a Sheep Day

  1. Go to Sheep Farms

Go to farms that allow sheep petting near you. In most areas there would be restriction due to the Covid 19 outbreak this year but there are online activities that you can take part in. Another alternative is to watch the past hug a sheep day videos such as the one below.

For those living around Tokyo, the nearest popular farm is Mother Farm.

Mother Bokujo (Mother Farm)

2. Get Sheep stuff.

I recommend getting sheep stuff from the sheep farms you visit or buy their products online in order to promote their sheep raring activities. And if you were moved by the story of the founding mother of the (Inter)National Hug a Sheep Day, her farm shop is here: Punkin’s Patch Farm Shop

#3. National Caramel Apple Day.

The National Caramel Apple Day is celebrated on the 31st every year.

Caramel Apples are whole apples covered in a layer of caramel, they are also know as taffy or toffee apples. Caramel Apples go together with the Halloween given its long tradition of bobbing apples – it seems like anything to do with whole apples has a place in the Halloween. However Caramel Apples have a much shorter history.

It is said that the recipe of caramel apple came from Ms Edna Kastrup, whose family founded the Affy Tapple company in 1948. Ms Edna’s recipe is still in use in their original line up.

Other sources has it that the recipe was invented by a creative Kraft confectioner probably in the 50s.

What to do on the Caramel Apple day

  1. Treat yourself , your family and friends to Caramel Apples or toffy.

I recommend getting the original Edna Katsrup’s recipe line up from the Taffy Apple company. Otherwise get from any other competitive brands out there.
